WA Wins WVIA's Scholastic Scrimmage Championship
   Wyoming Area High School's Scholastic Scrimmage Team concluded their academic year by winning the school's first Grand Championship. The team defeated Honesdale in the finals broadcast on WVIA TV on May 9. The team won $5000.00 for the school's general fund. 
   Scholastic Scrimmage quizzes students in the areas of social studies, language arts, mathematics, science and fine arts. Wyoming Area has been LIU 18 Champion five times in the last ten years and has won a total of $9000.00 for the school district.

JFK Receives 2009-2010 Distinguished Title I School Achievement Award
 Each year the Division of Federal Programs from the Pennsylvania Department of Education allocates a portion of Title 1 funds to Title 1 schools making AYP for two or more consecutive years.  All Title 1 schools in Wyoming Area School District received Achievement Award funds for acquiring AYP for the 2009 school year.
    Also, every year the Division of Federal Programs select a small number of Title 1 schools who meet the criteria for receiving the maximum Title 1 Achievement Award of $5000.00 and be selected to be named a Distinguished Title 1 School.
    Title 1 Distinguished Schools demonstrate a commitment to learning by holding their students to the high academic standards set forth by the Pennsylvania Department of Education for students and schools. This year the Division of Federal Programs selected 114 Title 1 schools to receive this maximum Academic Award and be recognized as a Distinguished Title 1 School.
    The criteria used for the selection was based on a 25 percentage gain on the PSSA test in Reading, Math and other tested subgroups of students within a Title 1 school.
    This year the John F. Kennedy Elementary School in Exeter was one of the selected 114 schools throughout the state to receive the 2009-2010 Distinguished Title 1 School Award.
    Recently all of the 114 selected 2009 -2010 Distinguished Title 1  Schools were honored and recognized for their best instructional practices and successes at the 2010 Title 1 Improving School Conference help in Pittsburgh,

WA Middle School 2nd at Science Olympiad
   Wyoming Area Middle School's Science Olympiad Team recently participated in regional competition at Penn State University, Wilkes-Barre Campus.
   The team finished in second place overall out of a field of 21 teams. Team members were awarded a total of three gold medals, four silver medals, and one bronze medals. The entire team will advance to the state competition to be held at Juniata College on April 30, 2010.

WA Physics Team Recently Competed 
      The AP Physics class participated in the 2010 JETS TEAMS competition on March 8. The team finished in sixth place for the Northeast Regional.

WBRE's Candice Kelly Visits WA
 
   Candice Kelly, WBRE's evening co-anchor, spoke to the WA Journalism classes on Wednesday, January 27. 
   Miss Argento's 7th and 8th period classes prepared questions from Mrs. Kelly's biography. The
informal Q & A session was held in the alcove in the auditorium.
   Before leaving, the students presented Mrs. Kelly with a WA Journalism t-shirt.
   "I had a great time and look forward to returning next year," stated Kelly.
   This was Mrs. Kelly's third year visiting the Journalism students secured through the efforts of Tony Callaio, WA's Public Relations Coordinator.
 
Wyoming Area Middle School Students 
Working with NASA
   Members of Mr. Grivensky's Advanced eighth-grade Science class at the Wyoming Area Secondary Center are participating in the NASA Endeavour Program. 
   The Endeavour program allows students to collaborate with NASA through a variety of challenges designed to problem-solve real problems faced by NASA engineers. The Wyoming Area team's project entitled "Balanced Forces in a Microgravity Environment" was chosen as a National Finalist and will be performed by NASA's team of engineers.

Wyoming Area Promotional Video
   A promotional video has been launched featuring Wyoming Area. This vehicle was designed to give people outside our area as well as inside the District, a better look at what is available at WA.
   We hope you enjoy the video that was shot, written and produced by Morgan Harding, Karisa Calvitti and Anthony Ponzo, all members of Mrs. Berti's Audio/Visual Communications class and the WAVE.

WA Kindergarten Pre-Registration
for 2010-2011
   Pre-registration is being held for students who will enter kindergarten for the 2010-2011 school year in the Wyoming Area School District. Parents of students who are pre-registered will be invited to parent workshops and receive kindergarten readiness information to assist their children in preparation for kindergarten.  
   The pre-registration information will also allow the district to provide registration information prior to the official registration in the spring.  Parents are asked to complete the form found here or pickup a registration form at the registration office located at the Secondary Center, 20 Memorial Street, Exeter.  
   Parents may also receive a form by calling 655-3733 ext. 2457.  
 
WA Vies for Second Consecutive 
Academic Title
   Wyoming Area High School is again competing in Scholastic Scrimmage, an academic competition sponsored by the US Army and WVIA-TV. 
   Scholastic Scrimmage quizzes students from in the areas of social studies, language arts. mathematics, science and fine arts. The competing teams from LIU18, NEIU 19 and CSIU16 have the opportunity to win $5000 for their school district. 
   Wyoming Area won the LIU18 Championship in 2009 and hopes for another successful year. This years team consists of Sophomore Davide Fanelli, Junior Debbie Gross, Junior Eric Werbin, Junior Team Captain Samantha Scott and Sophomore alternate Trevor Alder. 
   Team moderator is Eileen Palmer, Academic Teams Coach.
 
First General Services Conducts Fire Safety Program
 
   On October 8, First General Services of NEPA, held a fire safety seminar for the JFK students in the cafeteria. First General handed out "goodie containers" for each teacher that included school supplies, classroom decorations, t-shirts, etc.
   Each child also received a fire safety coloring book & crayon set. Al Zekoski, who has been doing fire safety for over 25 years, ran the PowerPoint presentation along with Danielle Sciandra. 
   The seminar ran almost an hour including a review on the importance of "being prepared" in cases of fire.
 
WA Food Service Announcement
   If your family has had a reduction in monthly income, your children may qualify under the income guidelines for free or reduced meals.
   You may reapply for eligibility any time during the school year. Free and Reduced Meal applications are available at your child's school, or call 655-2836, ext. 2351 and we will be happy to mail you an application.
 
Wyoming Area Hosted Area Vets
   
   Wyoming Area, once again, had the privilege of honoring local Veterans by hosting a Thanksgiving style luncheon, followed by a program in front of the student body in the gymnasium. Nearly 90 Vets participated in the program where students gave them a rousing and emotional standing ovation as they entered the gym. This year, SSG. Matthew B. Noll, US Army was the guest speaker.

Shore Bowl Teams Competed at Rutgers University
     
   The Wyoming Area Shore Bowl teams recently competed at this year's regional Shore Bowl competition at Rutgers University. 
   Team "A" captain Cody Poder, and members Rachel Gross, Alyssa Cajka, and Eric Werbin placed in the top 10 teams at the competiton. 
   Team "B" captian Matt Pizano and members Samantha Coco, Robert Brozowski, Brittany Spak, and Rachel Taylor made it to the quarter final round and were defeated by a team from the Marine Academy.

WA Places Second at Science Olympiad

WA Wall of Fame
   Wyoming Area, under the guidance of librarian Mrs. Charlene Berti, would like to create a Wall of Fame to be displayed on a wall in the Secondary Center library. 
   The goal of the "Wall" is to create a life-line to those graduates of Wyoming Area that have succeeded in their life/career. This will give the students at WA a chance to see that one can succeed in life that began right here in the hallways of WA.

Wyoming Area Awarded a Bronze Medal by U.S. News & World Report
U.S. News looked at thousands of public schools to identify the most outstanding.
    The 2010 U.S. News & World Report Americas Best High Schools methodology, developed by School Evaluation Services, a K-12 education data research business run by Standard & Poor's, is based on the key principles that a great high school must serve all its students well, not just those who are college bound, and that it must be able to produce measurable academic outcomes to show the school is successfully educating its student body across a range of performance indicators.
   This year, Wyoming Area is proud to have garnered a Bronze Medal.

WA School Board Re-organizes
   Wyoming Area School Board re-organized on Tuesday, December 8 with the swearing-in of two incumbents and two new members being sworn in.
   John Bolin and John Marianacci are back for a second term while Gil Dominick, a veteran of the school board returns and newcomer, Frank Casarella took the oath of office.
   Bolin will assume the presidency, Marianacci, vice president, Toni Valenti will return as secretary and Frank Casarella will take over the treasurer's position.

Wyoming Area Continues to Score High in PA Standardized Testing
  - Parents now able to access their child's grades online.  
    Superintendent Raymond J. Bernardi is pleased to announce district students, once again, performed above state averages in the 2009 Pennsylvania System of School Assessment (PSSA) tests.
   Eleventh-grade students scored particularly well being 83% proficient or advanced in math and 80% in reading, which is well above the state average of 56% in math and 65% in reading.
    In writing, the 11th grade class scored an impressive 96% proficient or advanced in writing whereas the state average was 83%. As a result of this success, the class ranked in the top 2% out of 501 school districts in Pennsylvania.
    "Our success in PSSA testing is due enlarge to the partnering of our dedicated staff of administrators and faculty along with students and their parents," said Bernardi.
    Wyoming Area is continuing to further that partnering strength by adding a tool for parents and/or guardians to access real-time grades of their students through a program called ProgressBook.
    ProgressBook is a classroom management system supporting the most recent K-12 standards-based education practices. To access online grades, click on the link at the top of this page in the left-hand column. Once there, you will enter a name and password. The site is confidential and secure.
    In addition to accessing grades, parents will be able to search for details on quizzes, tests, labs, attendance, and homework assignments.
    Grades for Secondary students may be accessed at this time with the elementary level being added next year, accordi
ng to Superintendent Bernardi.
    "With this secure system in place, parents and/or guardians will no longer have to wait until the end of a quarter to see how their student is progressing," said Bernardi.

Wyoming Area Scholars "Threepeat"
   Wyoming Area Middle School competed in the 14th Annual Young Scholars Program at Scranton Preparatory School on Saturday, November 7th. Approximately 100 top students from 23 schools competed in academic and nonacademic areas. The Wyoming Area team won our third consecutive championship and fourth in five years by defeating Good Shepherd Academy and Our Lady of Peace. Congratulations to Gabrielle Spagnuolo, Captain, Audrey Heidacavage, Danielle Spagnuolo and Gared Zaboski. Moderator is Eileen Palmer, Academic Teams Coach.

   The public records of this district shall mean any account, voucher or contract dealing with the receipt or disbursement of funds; acquisition, use or disposal of services or supplies, materials, equipment or other property; or any minutes, orders or decisions fixing the personal or property rights, privileges, immunities, duties or obligations of any person or group.
   The Board shall make the district's public records and copies thereof available for inspection in accordance with established guidelines, with the exception of those records exempted from such inspection and copying by law and Board policy.
